On the Mary River, the beautiful town of Kenilworth is around 45 minutes drive West of Coolum Beach, and home to the annual Kenilworth Arts Fest held early October. It is also known for it's amazing Cheese, Wine and Food Fest celebrating local produce and gourmet food products, held late June each year. The town is situated on the fringe of the Conondale National Park, and Kenilworth Bluff which offers some exceptional hiking and camping areas.
Travel 40 minutes South East of Kenilworth through beautiful countryside to the town of Maleny, on the Obi Obi Creek in the Blackall Ranges. Home to the Maleny Botanic Gardens and the Obi Obi Boardwalk, Maleny is also well known as a town of many galleries. A magnet for artists, Maleny boasts some of the finest in Australian artwork by local sculptors, painters, craftspeople and potters. Maleny is also home to the Brouhaha Brewery, opened in 2016 by local brewers and a place to enjoy locally brewed craft beer, and fine food with ingredients sourced from local produce.
Maleny is also the start point of The Great Hinterland Walk, a 58km one way circuit trail over the Maleny-Mapleton Plateau and the Blackall Range. The Blackall Range is one of the most dramatic terrains in Queensland, and boasts spectacular views of rolling mountains and valleys to the West, and the Pacific ocean to the East. View the tumbling cascades of Kondalilla Falls, cool off by a rainforest rock pool or experience the meandering Obi Obi Gorge, carved by water over millions of years. You'll discover a pristine environment with refreshing water holes, dense rainforest, an abundance of birdlife, and breathtaking views and scenery. For information on The Great Hinterland Walk visit the Trail Hiking Australia website.

Starting at the quaint town of Mapleton in the North and winding down to Maleny in the South is the Blackall Range Tourist Drive. This spectacular tourist route is well travelled by many visitors to the area, and provides an almost fairytale experience of some of the areas finest country towns. Mapleton is only about 15 minutes drive West of the busy town of Nambour, and is the best place to start this wonderful drive. The drive takes visitors on a journey of food, wine, culture and nature, and it is well worth taking some time to stop along the way.
Mapleton is renowned for its forests, walks and views, including Mapleton Falls and the Mapleton Falls National Park. The region forms part of The Great Hinterland Walk, taking you through warm subtropical rainforest, tall open eucalypt forest and picturesque waterfalls and swimming holes. A short drive South to the town of Flaxton, with it's lovely arts and crafts, devonshire teas and lunches. Visit the well regarded Flaxton Gardens and enjoy fine high tea on the terrace. On to the town of Montville with it's art galleries, cosy coffee shops and boutique stores. Here you will find everything from handmade beanies to one-off scupltures made by local artists. Located close to Kondalilla National Park, hikers can access the Great Hinterland Walk from Montville.
Photo of Booloumba Falls by Wild Swimming Australia

Located between the towns of Flaxton and Montville on the Blackall Range are the Kondalilla Falls within the Kondalilla National Park. The falls are one of the most spectacular and accessible on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. The walk down to the falls is 'family friendly' with some rock stairs and a maintained path. This dramatic waterfall and swimming hole provides wonderful views of the rainforest valley from the natural rock pools at the top. You can swim in the rock pools at both the top and bottom of the falls.
On the North side of Flaxton in the same general area are the Baxter Falls, on the Baxter Creek with a suspension bridge. A little further North again and just out from the town of Mapleton are the Mapleton Falls and Mapleton Falls Lookout. When walking in the rainforest, you may hear the wompoo fruit-dove, whose booming call reaches the ground from its feeding sites among the tree-tops. During warmer months listen for frogs in the pool beside the causeway. Take a close look at rocks around the pool and you'll see distinctive hexagonal shapes formed by volcanic activity 25 million years ago.
About 20 minutes drive West from Maleny is the magnificent Conondale National Park, and some of the finest swimming spots and waterfalls of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. You will find Booloumba Falls here, with the top section of the beautiful two-part waterfall providing a paradisiacal backdrop to a series of crystal clear pools. The main pool is deep and wide enough to swim a few laps. There is also a waist-deep plunge pool with a pebbly bottom and a heavenly view, just above the top section of falls. Also in this area a little way North are the Summer Falls.
At the Northern end of the Sunshine Coast in the well known Noosa National Park are the Fairy Pools. These are two natural tidal pools lying low between the basalt rocks just West of the tip of the headland at the Eastern end of Granite Bay, near Noosa. The smaller pool is only separated from the ocean at low tide but the larger one may still be usable at high tide when the swell is smaller and fewer waves crash over the rocks to refill the pool. It is possible to jump into the deeper section of the larger pool but there are submerged rocks at one end so get acquainted with the pool first.

The many national parks across the Sunshine Coast are sanctuaries for the preservation of the unique ecosystem and natural flora and fauna of the area. Most notable of these parks include the Conondale National Park, Maleny National Park, Kondalilla National Park, Mapleton Falls National Park and Noosa National Park. Each of these wonderful protected areas provide bushwalking tracks, camping grounds, and swimming areas. For magnificent coastal views, walk the Noosa National Park track from Hasting Street through to Hells Gates. Stop along the way for a dip in the ocean at Tea Tree Bay and the Fairy Pools right on the Northern tip of the park.
Photo of Noosa Main Beach by Craig Makepeace, YTravelBlog
www.ytravelblog.com
The Sunshine Coast is known for it's magnificent pristine beaches and seemingly endless coastline. The stretch of coastline between Noosa Heads and Coolum Beach is arguably one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, with it's golden sands, undulating dunes, and endless waves of the Pacific Ocean. At the Northern end of the coast is the exclusive Noosa Main Beach. The local enclave boasts one of the only North facing beaches on the East coast of Australia, and provides safe swimming due to it's sheltered location. A perfect afternoon would include a walk down Hastings Street for a look at the many boutique shops, a coffee at one of the many cafes, followed by a swim at the main beach.
Further down the coast is the vibrant area of Mooloolaba. With it's many restaurants along the esplanade, Mooloolaba attracts interstate and international visitors throughout the year and provides for a most cosmopolitan feel. Further South past the mouth of the Mooloolah River and the shoreline between Buddina and Currimundi Lake provides for quieter and less visited beaches, as this stretch is mostly used by locals who live directly opposite.
At the Southern end of the coast in the Caloundra area, Dicky Beach, Moffat Beach, and Shelly Beach each have their own individual appeal to both locals and holidaymakers. Around the point and Kings Beach provides the only South facing beach of the Sunshine Coast, and the Beachfront Salt Water Pool here is a popular swimming spot which provides a view over the Pacific Ocean.
Photo of Caloundra Lighthouse by The Foto Fanatic, Your Brisbane: Past and Present
At the Northern end of the coast is Laguna Lookout, on the West side of the Noosa National Park. Most popular at sunset, Laguna Lookout is ideally situated to provide amazing views over the Noosa Riverand the Noosa Hinterland beyond. At the Eastern most point of the Noosa National Park is Hell's Gates Lookout. The lookout is about 2.5km into the Coastal Track in the Noosa National Park and offers amazing views out to sea. In the Winter months it is an ideal place to spot whales, and in the Summer make sure to look down into the waters below where you may spot a turtle or two.
South to Coolum Beach and Point Perry is another fine lookout, accessible via a boardwalk along the shoreline from Coolum Beach. Just around the corner and you will find Point Arkwright. Although not the highest of elevations, there is a good picnic area here. Lows Lookout is another lookout in Coolum Beach at the end of Grandview Drive. This lookout offers a panoramic view of the magnificent coastline North to Noosa Heads, and inland over the hinterland. The lighthouse at Point Cartwright just near Mooloolaba Beach is another fine spot, and one of few where you can watch the sun set over the ocean due to the orientation of the coastline at this point.
Further South and Moffat Headland Lookout at Ma and Pa Bendall Park has viewing platforms overlooking Moffat Beach, and is a popular location to enjoy a beautiful sunset. The view North takes in the fine stretch of coastline up to Mooloolaba Beach, and South down to Kings Beach. You will also catch a glimpse of the majestic Glasshouse Mountains in the distance from this vantage point. Also at Kings Beach is the Caloundra lighthouses. This heritage-listed pair of lighthouses remain prominent landmarks in the Caloundra district and tours are available every second and forth Saturday of the month.
Inland lookouts that provide spectacular hinterland views include the Mapleton Falls Lookout, Gerrards Lookout on the Blackall Range Tourist Drive, and Point Glorious Lookout at the Northern end of the Mapleton National Park. For those who enjoy hiking there are also some spectacular vantage points atop several Sunshine Coast mountains, including Emu Mountain on the South side of Peregian Beach, Mount Coolum on the fringe of Coolum Beach, and Mount Ninderry about 15 minutes West of Coolum Beach. Of these three mountains the easiest hike is at Mount Emu, which sits just 71 meters above sea level.

The Sunshine Coast is home to many lakes and winding rivers that carve their way through the beautiful countryside down to the coast. Of these waterways several provide for excellent swimming and watersport activities. Possibly one of the most enchanting areas of the Sunshine Coast is the Noosa Everglades river and lake system. Known as the 'river of mirrors', this breathtakingly beautiful region is part of a significant and protected biosphere, which includes the neighbouring World Heritage listed Fraser Island. One of only two Everglade environments identified on the planet (the other being Everglades National Park in Florida), several operators provide visitors with tour access to this area.
The Noosa River winds through the towns of Tewantin and Noosaville, and is part of the Lake Cooloola, Lake Cootharaba and Lake Cooribah river system. The shallow waters of Lake Cooribah are perfect for a variety of water activities and provides for excellent swimming. Further upstream is the larger Lake Cootharaba and the town of Boreen Point, where there is a heritage hotel and yacht club. Both lakes provide sheltered conditions that are perfect for sailing. Along the Noosa River from the Marina at Tewantin and through Noosaville, there are many picnic areas and places to hire a variety of boats and other water craft.
Another lake at the Northern end of the coast is Lake Weyba. This large, shallow, saltwater lake is a popular spot for swimming, fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing. Cutting through the centre of the Sunshine Coast is the Maroochy River, from the town of Yandina to Maroochydore on the coast. The river widens as it nears the coastline and is an excellent river for fishing and rowing. There are many spots along the Maroochy River for picnics, several camp grounds along the banks, and sheltered swimming at Cotton Tree Beach at the river mouth.

When it comes to tourist attractions the whole family can enjoy, the Sunshine Coast has something for everyone. Due to the warm sub-tropical climate of the coast, many of the attractions are opened year round, and all are geared towards family fun. Perhaps the most famous and well known of all Sunshine Coast attractions is The Big Pineapple, with it's 16 metre tall landmark pineapple that doubles as a viewing deck. Located near the town of Woombye, this much loved local icon was designated a World Heritge Site in 2009 to preserve the legacy for generations to come. There is the Big Pineapple Train that winds through the plantation, the Wildlife HQ Zoo, and a high ropes and zipline course known as the TreeTop Challenge. Entry to the park is free. Visit The Big Pineapple website for further information.
Another gourmet attraction is The Ginger Factory in the town of Yandina. This is an absolute must do attraction for ginger lovers, with Ginger Town and the Ginger Shop offering a huge range of products with ginger the central ingredient. The whole family will enjoy the Ginger Train as it winds through hectares of sub-tropical gardens, and the live bee show and tastings is another family favourite. Entry to the attraction is free. Visit The Ginger Factory website for further information.
For something a little more physical there is the Bellingham Maze on the Tanawha Tourist Drive. The attraction has an incredible 80m X 80m living hedge maze, as well as a timber maze, rope maze, and tyre maze to challenge visitors of all ages. There is also a fun mini golf course at Bellington Maze for the whole family to enjoy. Visit the Bellingham Maze website for further information.
The SeaLife Sunshine Coast Aquarium is a must see for anyone interested in marine life and want to get a close-up look at these beautiful creatures. The attraction has 11 different themed zones including the magnificent Ocean Tunnel, where visitors can explore the depths of the ocean with sharks, rays and reef fish swimming overhead. For a more 'hands on' experience, visitors can actually touch a variety of marine life including beautiful sea stars, sea cucumbers and more. A variety of programs are run at the SeaLife Sunshine Coast Aquarium including an up-close Seal Encounter and the Seal Swim Experience. Visit the SeaLife Sunshine Coast Aquarium website for further information.
At the Southern end of the Sunshine Coast is Australia Zoo, established by the late Steve Erwin. His family continue his legacy of conservation, with the zoo focussed on the protection of native animals and wildlife. The zoo runs many educational programs for visitors of all ages and the Adopt an Animal program. Individual and family passes are available and the zoo is open year round. Visit the Australia Zoo website for further information.
